NEW BEERS from Haven Brewing

Posted Thursday, August 01, 2013 by Mona Shah

Haven Brewing Head Brewer Brian Thorson has produced many acclaimed beers at noted Northern California craft breweries, Drake’s and Trumer Pils, and now he has released his first small-batch, house-crafted beers. Thorson's new beers further define Haven Brewing’s core brand by creating base beers as a reference point for all future brews. He will be focusing on a range of styles, with emphasis on sessionable beers.

If you didn't already know... Thorson has been involved in producing many noted craft beers still available and praised today. Over his five-year stint at Drake’s Brewing, he was responsible for creating Hopocalypse in 2008, an Imperial IPA (9.3% ABV, 100+ IBUs). Thorson created it to, in his words, “blow off some steam” after the monotony of running the bottling line and toiling with all the brewing and cellar operations wore thin.

Here are Brian's new beers:

Simcoded
Style: Pale Ale
5.5% ABV | IBU: 37 | 7 SRM
Hops: Simcoe, Cascade, and Crystal
A light and easy drinking pale ale that has an abundant amount of late boil & dry hop additions, and has just the right amount of bitterness to make you ask for the next sip quickly. As the names states, its Simcoe dominant with a touch of Crystal and Cascade to add to the complexity of the aroma.

Lenny G.
Style: Amber
5.7% ABV | IBU: 15 | 15 SRM
Hops: Horizon and Willamette
American Barley and Crystal Malts
Just when you thought you knew what cool was... this Amber has a beautiful orange hue with an even smoother jazz character on your palate. Verizon and Willamette hops bring balance to the American 2-Row, Crystal and Aromatic Malt.

Hops, Inc.
Style: IPA
6.9% ABV | IBU: 60 | 6 SRM
Hops: Citra and Chinook
92% Barley Malt
8% Simpsons Golden Naked Oats
This beer abundantly showcases hop flavor and aroma, versus hop bitterness.

More Please
Style: Kölsch
5.0% ABV | IBU: 15 | 3.8 SRM
Hops: Noble
5% Wheat
If you aren't in the mood for a hoppy, more malty, or somewhat roasty beer, then this one's for you. Sometime less is More. I'll have More Kolsch, Please.

Jimmy Hafen
Style: Bavarian Hefeweizen
4.8% ABV | IBU: 11 | 5 SRM
Hops: Saaz
50/50 white wheat / barley malt
Jimmy's cloudy and light in appearance in color and taste, with a nice fluffy banana tail in aroma and flavor.

Disco Pants
Style: Black Ale
6.1% ABV | IBU: 31 | 61 SRM
Hops: Northern Brewer and Willamette
Caramel, Roast and Smoke Malts
This one's dark in appearance, light and snappy enough to drink more than one.

Orange Face (O Face)
Style: Hoppy Amber Ale
6% ABV | IBU: 51
Hops: Horizon, Falconer's Flight, Columbus
This is an American-Style Ale hopped up with some powerful American hops. It's name stems from its orange hue and citrus-dominant hop notes.

Performance Enhancing Drink (PED)
Style: American Coffee Brown Ale
4.5% ABV | IBU: 14
Hops: All-American Malts, Hops and Coffee
Brown Ale called up to the bigs by Haven Brewing and Portola Coffee Lab! This is a 4.5 ABV beer with major league coffee added during conditioning -- we're talking about 1.5 pounds per barrel from Portola Coffee Lab!

Glass Elevator  (aka, The Great Glass Elevator)
Style: Nitro Chocolate Wheat Beer
5.5% ABV
Hops: Maris Otter, Wheat Malt, and a touch of Crystal Malt (to sustain the all the chocolate)
Chocolate was added in chip form in the kettle and also to beer in the tank in pure cacao nib form.
Kettle Additions:
Felchlin Grand Cru Maracaibo Clasificado 65% Cacoa Chips (Venezuela)
Felchlin Cru Hacienda Elvesia 74% Cacao Chips (Dominican Republic)
Tank Addition: Tcho Roasted Pure Cacao nibs (Ecuador)
Nice and creamy with a hints of nuttiness and citrus derived from the types of chocolates used.  Not too heavy, so you can sit outside and still enjoy it in the afternoon sunshine.
